As promised, here are my predictions for the teams that will advance to Stage 2:
Group A: Germany & Poland
Group B: England & Sweden
Group C: This group BLOWS! I can't believe that Argentina and the Netherlands were picked together. Fifa should be shot.
…and Uzi will kill me for this, but although I think that Argentina *may* advance, I don't think the Netherlands will.
In fact, I'm going with Cote d'Ivoire because of Drogba (Chelsea's brilliant striker).

ok shoots.. man i have been so busy lately. I don't think any unemployed man has ever been as busy over teh course of a week as I have bene this week. Busy enuff to post two lines here and there but not to make a whole post about football.

official count stands at 47 days 11 hours and 10 mins to the World cup kickofff..
and here is my list .. or my thoughts... scratch the list idea.
I think Germany is going to have big trouble. They're defence is way too young and they usually are defensive stalwarts. Oliver Kahn being backup is also strange since he is also captain of the team, and I think the recent backlash against Klinsmann is warranted. Germany will have a tough time proving that they are a better than top 14 team. They are currently ranked 18.
Group C definitely is a tough group. And if any team goes out half-heartedly at any point, they will upset their own chances. Ivory Coast, Netherlands and Argentina will fight to the teeth.. but I have to side with the Argentines and Dutch.. I think they're collective experience at this level will get them through. I would love to see Ivory Coast put up a fight tho, but only as long as they know their place.
The other tough group is F. Brazil, Croatia, Japan and Australia. The last one is negligible.. but I expect Croatia to put up a good fight, they are coming out of a very competitive region and deserve their spot. They might be a sleeper against Japan. Brazil sucks but they will move on ofcourse. Down with Ronaldinho, the faker! (check spellign here..ok..no slip of hand. good.)
Group E - man, I think Ghana could pull off an upset here and thrash Italy. I think they really have it in them. And Italy is just not looking the same to me right now.. I could be wrong. They are a great side, but I have a feeling it'll be a tough group. The Czechs are awesome. And the USA.. god knows when they became a football nation. Humbug! WHY do they have to destroy everything that is good and pure in this world. First, canadian lumber.. now this.
everythign else.. is arrite.. except that altho ENgland will move on. they'll get thrashed soon enufff..
countries I want to see win are all the ones with the coloured folk (speaking as one myself) in them. Angola, Iran, Tunisia, Saudia, Ghana, and Ivory Coast.
The country I want to see win the world cup is the one with all teh white ppl in it.. ie. Argentina.. altho I would settle for a Croatia win too.
Sleeper pick for World cup: Czech Republic.
Pick that would lead to Uzi rioting: Brazil.

Interesting points re Germany. They've not won a WC since Mexico, correct? Or it was either the WC before that or immediately after. It's always shit when the host team gets kicked out in the first round.

I still recall finding out they had won the bid to host the '98 WC, and I actually nearly hyper ventilated. I was so upset that they would pollute such a brilliant sport. And they've tried. And they will continue to do so. But I don't think its violent enough for them...not for a nation that loves brutish football (and let's not get started on the stupidity of that chosen name for the pigskin. OR for the stupidity of the chosen 'cover' for that dumb pointy ball. Pig. Oink.)

a few points to update and comment on:
America seems to have solved their lumber issues with Canada (notice yesterday's CBC).. now ther's only soccer left. Oh and Venezuela, Iraq, Iran, the United Nations not to mention the slew of domestic issues they have. Perhaps we're being too demanding. However, it must be said, that they did start it. All of it.
regarding Ghana and goign down to Little Italy... uhh.. not a good idea hun. Cuz those Italians have dominance over teh shampoo market and they really could have you boycotted from your favorite watermelon shampoo. Just a thought. Think of the burnt pizzas too.
Croatia I think, is the team that could cause a major upset at the World Cup. Infact, I amsure they will. Did you know they came out on top of their qualifying group? A group that included Sweden? Dang. And their jersey is so sweeet... The plaid red and white.. so hot. Or so think the 7 year old chocolate freak within me. I bought it yesterday, and then promptly wore it. Then while walkign the street, two cars honked at me and pointed to my chest. I looked down expecting to see myself miraculously naked, but no, I was wearing teh jersey.. hence, it is safe to assume that Qatar is the nation where the Croatian football team enjoys the staunchest support outside Croatia. Yes, indeed.
Lastly, colonialist nations suck. True. England especially suck. True. But a Spain win would be awesome tho, they ahve been good for many a year, but have never capitalised. Portugal is another one to keep an eye out for. What sucks more than all those colonialist nations combined however, is Brazil. Double True.
All in all, I don't think we disagree much Maha.. we seem to love our football. Seem to hate the same teams.. like the underdogs and beautiful, old skool futbol. And you did say that Argentina winning woule be awesomly cool. Truness defined, right there. So, you're arrrite in my books girl!

If NONE of my predictions were to come true and if this WC sucks the big one, I would be happiest if I got to see a game between Iran and the US where Iran kicks US ass and then they all shake hands and trade shirts after.
Let's hope the US doesn't attack Iran and fuck Iran's WC potential. There's this book called How Soccer Explains the World: An Unlikely Theory of Globalization, that I recommend you pick up if you can!

Actually; many of the commentators on this WC are expecting Croatia to do some damage, so I guess this is a distinct possibility. And if Uzi says so...
I actually wouldn't mind seeing Spain or Portugal win. They're both relatively safe politically and so I would support a win from either.
