Mama is a Mexican

I was hanging out with mama the other evening when I noticed an interesting straw chapeau. It was a rich coffee cream colour with a red trim and an elastic that one uses to strap around their chin. There is a dancing man carrying maracas drawn on to the back of it. He too wears the same hat: the sombrero.

I didn’t think anything of it until I went upstairs to read. Half an hour later, I came back down to make a cup of coffee and noticed that the sombrero had mysteriously disappeared. I searched high and low and considered that the dancing man had come to life, packed up and took our sombrero away…

Until mama came in from her garden. She was wearing the sombrero.

Not a little.
Not slightly.
But rather completely, with chin strap firmly beneath her chin.

“It keeps the sun out of my eyes.”
“It’s a sombrero.”
“It keeps the sun out of my eyes.”
“But. It’s a sombrero.”
“Yeeeee, ouf, Maha, who cares! It’s a hat.”
“No, mama -- that, on your head, is a SOM-BRE-RO.”
“You think you’re so smart” were the words I heard as a set of sparkly maracas appeared in her hands and she danced her way out of the door and back to the garden.

Welcome back sparkly girl :-) you read my mind and posted this before reading what i sent you a bit later asking you to post something sparkly!

Well I must be a Mom too because reading your post, I had no clue what a SOM-BRE-RO is except that it sounded, as your mother said, as a "hat".. motherhood does something to your imagination.. you lose it somewhere between diapers and waiting up for teenagers.. Maha.. IT INDEED IS JUST A HAT! get over it!

P.S. That smile in the picture is so special.. never lose it.

Hey Maha! I have a necklace you can borrow that would go soooo well with that hat! My ma-in-law came back from holiday with a giant silver sombrero pendant for me. As I am only of diminutive proportions, I tend not to wear it...well, not round my neck anyway. It's great for keeping the sun out of my eyes though!!!

It takes a strong, confident woman to wear a sombrero as if it's the most natural thing in the world.

Maybe she'll start a trend. After all, it only takes one person to start a trend. :D
