Colleen, you’re right. Technically, a ‘kaffir’ is someone who covers and turns their heart away from The Message. Very specifically, and in fine detail, it is someone who has heard the message of Islam (specifically) and has shunned that message. It is a very very very heavy word to use, and the immediate connotation is that a Kaffir is hell-bound. I refuse to believe this, and more importantly, I refuse to trespass a decision that is ONLY in the hands of God (judgment on who goes to hell and who goes to heaven).

The English word – the closest, anyway – would be somewhere between a non-Believer and an athiest whose studied Islam and refused to pay attention to it’s message. Islam, because it is the continuation of Judaism and Christianty and therefor considered one and the same.
