“We are cold to others only when we are dull in ourselves, and have neither thoughts nor feelings to impart to them.”

And what fails to be realized is that there is always something to impart, even if it is just some small token of recognizing that we are all part of the same world, sharing the same joys and preoccupations.
People tend to forget that and keep to themselves, and be cold to others in doing so. I like that he said “dull in ourselves”–keep oneself sharp, as it were, and we may easily find things in common and feelings to share with each other.

I’m at the public library this morning so I can access my blog!
I believe that’s kindness, right – that small token. Sometimes we don’t wish to be a part of someone’s life, or we need to be on a time-out because of pain and hurt. In that case, we need to at least extend the courtesy of letting someone know that we will be ‘cold’…until we can be warm again without lying about that warmth or forcing it…
I like your interpretation of keeping ourselves sharp. Smart!
