The Music

Today’s bounty, picked from the same tree as yesterday. I am still over the moon!

Part  of my day was spent at the Sony Lot where I may have wandered into stages which I was not supposed to wander into. Y’all. There’s free food, clothes, and make-up everywhere.

A favourite part of my day, however, was spent listening to a homeless woman play a grand piano on the Venice Beach Boardwalk. As I was walking past her, I wasn’t sure if she was awake or asleep; I think, truth told, she may have been passing in and out of an alcoholic awareness, as next to her feet was a very large pop bottle not filled with pop.

Every about 20 or 30 seconds, she would come out of her slump and start playing wildly for about the same amount of time before stopping suddenly, to lean forward and possibly go into a different consciousness. It’s quite evident that she has classical training, though somewhere along the way, it fell to the side of drink and whatever else has stolen her life at present.

I hope that playing this piano brings her some kind of solace.

What a world.

Today, I am grateful for:
1. The freestyle fellas at the corner of Venice Boardwalk and Windwards. A couple of nights ago, I watched the sunset while listening to their raps. Talent. Talent. Taaaaalent. MashAllah.
2. Two nights back, whomever was playing drums shortly after sunset on Westminster, near Riviera. I stopped to listen for a good 15 minutes. Thank you. I have not been able to shake you or the pianist.
3. The passage of time. Ya Allah, what wonder a year will do for your creation’s hearts. Thank you.
