Maha Monday Column & Video: On sex & chore obligations

At Chai Latte Diaries, I’m asked about sexual and household obligations inside of marriage: (1) Islamically speaking, sex as mutual pleasure is (without coercion) an obligation for you and your man (both ways). It is critical for both your health and well-being emotionally, psychologically, and physically. It is also one of the most important forms of communication between you and an expression of your love, kindness and tenderness for each other.

(2) Your work in the home, is as dictated by Islam, to be respected, revered, and treated as though (for lack of a better reference in our consumer age) you are the CEO of a company. You are the CEO of this family and household and your husband needs to get behind this with neither hesitation nor argument. However, also Islamically speaking, housework and domestic chores are not the sole responsibility of the woman, even if she is not working outside the home.
