The Summer Rain

Going for a walk in a warm summer rain is one of the most relaxing things I can do for myself. Today was one such day and I kept stopping so that I might pay proper attention to the smell of wet soil and dust. We’ve had a heatwave this weekend, so a rainfall today cleaned the streets and quenched the earth.

I hope that for those of you in Ottawa, you had a moment to enjoy one of summer’s gentlest offerings.

Today, I am grateful for:
1. Ottawa’s lush greenery. Everywhere you turn, you’re surrounded by it. It’s especially lovely in the older neighbourhoods where the trees are taller than the homes.
2. Sweat. Thank you for keeping us from overheating, especially on days like yesterday when it was nearly 30 degrees.
3. Friends who celebrate our wins, as equally as helping us through our ‘sad’. I have always argued that the true measure of friendship isn’t to be found solely in those who will sit with us in our sadness, but rather in those who will do this, while also being there for our wins. Reflect on what it means when some friends are only interested in sitting with you when you are dulled by pain, but not when you are made brighter by wins.
